Our Story

Sierra Nevada General Store

We're a family-run shop based in Grass Valley, California. That's the Sierra Nevada foothills, an hour from Lake Tahoe, two from the Pacific, one from the Central Valley if you take Highway 49 south. We've lived here our whole lives. Our kids go to school here. Our team drinks coffee at the same handful of places every morning. The mountains aren't a brand for us. They're outside the kitchen window.

Why we exist

The big regional brands love the postcard version of the Sierra. Yosemite, Tahoe, maybe Mammoth on a good day. That's the brochure. The rest of it (the Donner Pass coffee stop, the Highway 395 detour to Mono Lake, the cabin nobody wants to leave, the lake your grandparents took your dad to) doesn't fit on a brochure.

We make designs for the whole range. The towns most people drive through and locals know by heart. The roads that get you to the trailhead. The lakes that are colder than you think and exactly the temperature they should be. The wildflowers that show up for four weeks in April if you know where to look. Our catalog runs wider than what fits on a tourist's first visit. Highway 395, Carson City, Foresthill, the Eastern Sierra, the parts of the map most general stores leave off.

How it gets to you

Every order is printed on demand. That means no warehouse full of inventory waiting to become last season's clearance. No overprint runs ending up in a landfill. You order it, our print partners in the U.S. make it, it ships to you. The model is slower than a 2-day Amazon stockroom and faster than wholesale. We think that's the right speed.

It also means our catalog can be ambitious. We can put a deeply specific design (say, the elevation of Pyramid Peak, or the depth of Lake Tahoe to the nearest foot, or the sign at the Donner Memorial summit) on a tee, a tumbler, a poster, a beanie. Without POD, those would never get made. The shirt that's just a little too local to be commercial gets made anyway, because making one shirt is the same as making a thousand for us.

What we make

Three things we keep coming back to:

  • Place names. Town signs, highway shields, depth maps, elevations, the moments a Sierra road becomes a memory. The Towns & Roads line.
  • Sierra Tarot. Twenty-two cards reimagined for mountain life. The Hermit is wearing wool. The Empress lives in a cabin. The Sun is rising over Carson Pass. If you've ever shuffled cards on a porch at altitude, you already understand.
  • The Sierra at altitude. Map Collection, California Poppy, Nevada Pride, Cali Pride. The regional pieces that say the place you love without having to explain it.

Who it's for

Locals who already know all of this and want it on a shirt. People who grew up here and moved away. People who come up for summer and stay a little too long. People who are about to come up for the first time and want to look like they belong. People who'll never make it but love the place anyway. We're glad you're all here.

Come visit

We're online only. There's no storefront to walk into. (Yet. Maybe ever. The print-on-demand model is what lets us put weird-specific designs in your hands, and a brick-and-mortar would change that math.) What you can do: drive up Highway 49 in April when the poppies are out, take the Eastern Sierra detour off 395, stand at the base of Pyramid Peak and look up. We made you a shirt for it.

Questions, requests, designs you wish we'd make? Tell us. We read everything.
